From a BMJ data briefing ...

In 2000, the World Health Organisation ranked all countries based on their health systems (list below). In a BMJ data briefing, it is argued that this analysis, and those that followed by the EuroHealth Consumer Index and the Commonwealth Fund are of little relevance to policy makers.

I read elsewhere that the task of compiling this list is too much for the WHO to repeat.

What do you think of the ranks they came up with? Have things changed much in 11 years? Which country would you put at the top?

This list is 11 years out of date. I wonder what the scoring criteria was (I'm too lazy to look it up from your links).

Does the poor rating of African countries and relatively low rating of India have anything to do with higher income countries enticing the good doctors, nurses, etc away to benefit themselves?

Or is this more about policy than good doctors? Ooh that's interesting - what makes a good health system? Good policy or good healthcare workers?

Also interesting that in the same year, FIFA put France first in its ranking of international football teams .

doc2doc What do you think of the NHS reforms?? Will this change your perception? Discuss on doc2doc: Is there anyone out there who likes the health reforms? http://bit.ly/nY3Lgn

  • Jane Jana Coles Not really, no! I have a fear that it will mean the poor will not get adequate healthcare, much like the system in the US.
Tuesday at 12:41 doc2doc It's already a postcode lottery but are you worried that parts of the NHS will be privatised? Do you trust private companies to run 'NHS services'? Is that your fear?
  • Tuesday at 12:45 ·
  • Jane Jana Coles No, I don't. If you look at all the other British services that have been privatised over the years one thing is abundantly clear; private companies only care about how much money they can make and to hell with those that cannot pay. For example, the rail companies. Need I say anymore?

@doc2doc Why not ask - how many written complaints is an acceptable number for a GP in a year ? My PCT says 24 is absolutely fine ! not me !

As an Australian, I note we are 32nd and Canada 30th. Greece is 14th. It is clearly a well thought out ranking system. We have universal free public health and a private system which is very efficient.

Having travelled the world, I am very happy to be 32nd and will stay here. I have been on ward round in Paris Hospitals for a week and am happy to be where I am thank you.

Just give me some more kangaroo droppings for my wound mate and I'll make a nice poultice out of blue gum bark.

At least the UK faired better than in the eurovision song contest, so guess we should be happy with that.

As for Italy coming in at number 2, my experience of their healthcare system a couple of years ago tends to make me question what the criteria was. Perhaps Silvio invited the WHO panel to one of his infamous Bunga Bunga parties. And, as for San Marino was the survey confused with population size as 3 represents its total number of inhabitants surely?

There also appears to be a strong correlation between teh lading countries and where Grand prixs are held. I suspect that Bernie Ecclestone selects countries for Grand Prixs based on their healthcare so that they can keep him alive to count his money, which he of course would not plough back into healthcare.

Ah it's eleven years old. So that might explain some of the rankings.  Some countries such as China and Brazil have had lots of money pumped into their health services so might have edged up the rankings a bit.
But I would prefer to be treated in the NHS I think. Still. Just.

This is the most controversial document WHO ever prepared and published. After its publication ,the WHO Headquarter was flooded with complaints that is why WHO never published a second  one. i have worked abroad and closely observed 4 different countries health care delivery system. i will never endorse even20% accuracy of this document. Its a  task much beyond the capabilities and capacities of every one including WHO.

This obviously is a qualified response, as the answer depends on affordability. If money is no object, then the USA must be right up there. If they weren't a world leader in medical care, then why do so many patients from developed countries get referred there for complex treatments? However, we all know that their superb healthcare system is not available to a large number of their own citizens, based on lack of affordability. For an overall rating, one needs to look at stats like infant mortality rates and survival rates following cancer treatment, etc. Then I guess one of the Western European or Scandanavian countires must be tops. Sadly the UK's NHS system falls short.

This one is interesting. There is always that situation where the 'grass is greener' on the other side. Putting aside how this classification was got at, and what criteria were used, and haveing experienced various'medical systems' but in the UK and across 'the pond', the NHS is the best systems.

I'm now based abroad, but can appreciate the NHS much more now. You need to have a chance to practise elsewhere than the UK to see this.

Shocked to see that INDIA has place 112 in the WHO list which is 11 years old. I really wonder whether it has improved. Some states in India have achieved Scandinavian standards in literacy, mortality rates, immunization etc. but there are some states which bring down the National rates. Dr Prithi Nair from Kerala , India.
