To allow one to winge/whinge (why on earth is there a silent h??) does not make one a whinger. A whinger in my part of the world is a pejorative whereas to whinge is the prerogative of all of us and does not denote the same. I think we may be disagreeing over subtleties which are related to linguistic usage in my country versus yours. eg "He came home and had a whinge to his wife about his boss today" does not mean this bloke is a born whinger.

You use a reptile as your logo and snakes are herpetic i.e. they slither along the ground. Herpes and serpens are interchangeable and thus the word Herpes zoster etc.I meant this purely as an epithet to your avatar which you have adopted and not I. There is a long multicultural story behind the snake as you no doubt know.

Where I live we are no strangers to snakes and I am proud the land that I own has such a rich ecosystem they can co-exist with us. Snake shed their skins on our trellis over our deck where the sun ripens purpling grapes. It is illegal to kill a snake in Australia.

The snakes will be here long after I have shed my last skin and they have wound around our psyche like the magic they have wound aroung the staves of fleet-footed Hermes and wise Hippocrates.

I meant you no ill. I spat you no venom. I play with words and speak in riddles.

Phew! Thank you Odysseus - I am relieved we can still be on friendly terms Smile

I chose the snake as my avatar for two reasons:

(1) it's ancient symbolism of medicine and the medical profession

(2) although I am no herpetologist, I am a big fan of snakes (and, contrary to most I suspect, I envy my Australian friends the fact that they live in a world so replete with snakes).

We only have one species of snake in Scotland - the common adder (Vipera berus) which, by volume, has one of the most potent venoms in the snake world.
I have actually written a small book about adders which was sent off to be published but was then duly shelved. Ho hum.

In Response to Re: Are doctors justified in striking in defence of their pensions? : I object, Your Honour. the term "dotage" is condescending and a fencing lesson costs the same as a pizza. One can sail on someone else's boat for free. As for speaking French this is free and can be learnt at school.   I for one worked for 20 years in our public hospital system and still do an aboriginal clinic and share a kerosene tin with an aardvark which is left wing but the tin was made by a right wing oil company. Our Labor (leftist) politicians send their children to private schools and when sick they "go private" including private hospitals which in Oz are full of Che Guevaras and trades union officials who tend to list to the right when sick and to the left when well.  We have the right to wander off topic as all our leaders in parliament do.  Post script: I was at high school when Dr Guevara met his end.

The NHS pension is part of our income, deferred until after retirement. . A cut in our pensions is a cut in our income. We are right to be angry about this, and should not accept it without a fight.
