1. The government veto demands/ FoI request to publish the risk register on the Health and Social Bill. Is there anything more than can be said or done? Read and contribute your thoughts to our related discussion: NHS reforms: the biggest cover up since the invasion of Iraq
2. A scheme in Dundee to persuade people to give up smoking by giving them £12.50 worth of food vouchers, and nicotine patches etc has been evaluated. Only 9% had given up at one year. More to follow in BMJ news.
3. Will the Queen’s speech include a Bill on social care? Do we need a proper funding system to support this? |

Respected Dr. Matthews, here are my opinions 1) The claim by health secretary Andrew Lansley that it is essential to retain 'a safe space where officials are able to give ministers full and frank advice in developing policies.' seems justifiable, though the governments verdict is right in achieving 'greater transparency. 2) Although the 'scheme in Dundee to persuade people to give up smoking' is with a good motivation, the poor response suggests lack of public awareness or interest. 3) I do think that the Queen’s speech will include a Bill on social care, & would need a huge funding system for the proper implementation. |

Hi Dr K Ashutosh I think the problem is that Health Secretary Lansley is justifying the veto on releasing a register on the grounds that he won't be able to implement his government's policy. It looks like he values political ideology and ambition over patient safety and open discussion of the risks the reforms might bring. Juxtaposing this with the fact he champions transparent and open government is laughable and an absurd statement to make. So, I think the two statements are at odds and does nothing for his reputation or confidence in the reforms.
