The top three things we discussed in the BMJ huddle this morning were:

1. An NHS trial has gound that unlicensed Avastin injectionsm, instead of Lucentis in the treatment of macular degeneration could save save £84.5m.

2. The Occupy movement went to the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting in Philadelphia to protest about the “Label Bible” (also known as the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual or DSM 5), which some critics say is seeking to medicalise normal human behaviours, such as shyness and grief. http://www.mindfreedom.org/campaign/boycott-normal/occupy-apa

3. By 2030, 42% of US adults will be obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, according to  a new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (doi: 10.1016/j.amepre.2011.10.026)

re 2. and the problems of medicalising normality - think I'm with Occupy on that one. To classify a universal human condition/emotion (bereavement) as a mental illness is nuts if that is what they are going to do (and according to reports I have seen they are)

Don't get me wrong but i find this offensive

""By 2030, 42% of US adults will be obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more"

While millions die of hunger and famine all around the wolrd, Americans are getting fatter day by day. No doubt  bariatric surgery  is doing a roaring business in the US.

First you eat so much that you get extra fat and then spend thousands of dollars to get rid of the extra fat. How more ridiculous it can get ?

Surely, the use of Avastin can be much more cost effective than Lucentis of Novartis, & I think & would request the Novartis, not to oppose Avastin purely on commercial grounds, as avastin is also found to be well effective in 'wet' macular degeneration, as well as is having low cost which will ultimately benefit the patients.
