Diazepam is FDA pregnancy category D. There have been reports of respiratory and feeding difficulties as well as hypothermia in children born to mothers who have been receiving benzodiazepines late in pregnancy.
Why many doctors (especially Gyn. & Obst.) prescribing of diazepam to pregnant women in spite of documented evidence that this may lead to :
1. Low birth weight.
2. Breathing difficulties.
3. “Floppy” muscles.
4. Unstable body temperature.
5. Alteration in heart rate/function.
6. Altered EEG measurements.
7. Withdrawal syndrome (can be protracted) with irritability, convulsions etc.
