This award celebrates an outstanding contribution by an international or UK-based individual to improvements in medical research, clinical medicine, medical education, or public health. Last year we had 119 nominations and 40,000 people voted in the on-line poll. It was won by Professor Marleen Temmerman, an expert in women’s health who has promoted the needs of women in Africa as well as Belgium. She is currently professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University Hospital in Belgium, head of the obstetrics and gynaecology department at the Ghent University Hospital, and a senator in the Belgian Parliament. In the awards' first year, first place went to Dr Judith McKay from Hong Kong, who has spent her life fighting the tobacco industry, and who was once described by the industry as "the most dangerous woman" in the world. Needless to say, she was delighted by the designation. |
