Following tough competition at this year’s successful BMJ Group Awards in March, it is already time to start thinking about next year’s awards to be held on 18 May 2011. The award categories recognise individuals, organisations and initiatives that have demonstrated outstanding and measurable contributions to health care, and this year includes three new awards for innovation in health care, sustainable health care and medical team in a crisis zone.

If you know of or have been part of a team of extraordinary researchers, practitioners or individuals whose work has positively influenced national or global public health, submit your entry now on groupawards.bmj.com

In an incredible 2010, I have worked in 2 disaster zones: Haiti Earthquake and Pakistan floods. Both projects I am still passionately involved in and both are continuing to thrive. The Haitian one I have helped to develop and the Pakistani one I helped to establish in the first place.

I always find it difficult in these large award ceremonies when they describe "exceptional impacts". However, in my opinion, those two medical organisations, both British, have done exceptional work, even if on just a small scale.

I dont think disaster medicine is an individual effort or should be an individul award. So if I ever find some time, Ill try and nominate these two organisations both before January.
