My christian doctrine teacher at school used to get us to bring in an article from the newspaper that was about good news. Which in the 1980's in Ireland was a bit of hard work -as well as being corny and worthy and goody-goody and everything else that kids hate. A  few years later Mr Doyle (who wore sandals) would be proud of that fact that I am posting about some good news for health professionals - the BMJ awards. The awards happened last week and were the first time the BMJ has done this and hopefully we will continue every year from now on. You can read about the winners here.

The official highpoint was the lifetime achievement award that went to Judith Longstaff Mackay, who has campaigned against tobacco since 1984. Could you be a winner next year? Check out the link and start to think what projects you could submit. My personal highpoint was meeting a lovely man dressed in a dinner jacket outside Bond street tube - definitely an awards attendee I said to myself.

Me: Did you like the awards?

Him: They were great - and badly needed at a time like this

Me: What did you think of the first winner's speech?

Him: Brilliant - summed up what the building industry is all about

Me: (to myself and wondering whether to say anything out loud): Excellent - I think we might have been at different awards.

perhaps the brains behind the D2D team should get some form of award next year - as parf of creating a new online community for us all - or maybe when it gets to the 1 yr anniversary of D2D the members themselves should hold an awards event - best contributors within various forum areas, most controvertial discussions started, favourite bloggers etc

I think it would be really interesting to have a meeting of those who contribute to doc2doc eg like a mini-conference so I can claim it on my tax (it is a long way from Oz  to the pigeon loft at the BMJ). Meeting people would be fun and interesting.

We could make it like the Logies, Emmies, or Academy Awards or such, meet in a pub in London or in  Bretany, the south of France, or a Greek Island eg. Corfu, for a few days, read some papers we have written, maybe a poem or something on chaplains in the NHS. We could even have it conjointly with Medical Humanities and make our  dress code conform to their code of  white socks sandals and shorts for men, and hair nets, buns, potato sack and flat sandals  for women ;).

Roger, this is a great idea and one that we have considered as a social network is not just about interaction via the web. Humans are sociable and therefore creating a physical event where the community can meet and talk is a good idea. I'll set up a poll on the site and see if we can get an overall consensus from the community.

Best wishes, from the pigeon loft.

I second Odysseus's opinion, we should all meet in London or greece, or somewhere Warm,  Not NY, I am growing weary of the old.   I would be willing to read poetry, and some essays of mine.   Perhaps a good strong cup of Earl Grey tea as well.
