Memoirs of a Medic: How far will you go?

Now when it comes to exams everyone knows sacrifices have to be made. Most people will have heard their parents at some point during their school career say: you can’t go out tonight, you can’t play computer all day, you must get up before lunch...to do some work!

When you get to university (if not before that) you’re on your own when it comes to your revision timetable. All of a sudden nobody is checking up on you but the idea is that at this point you understand the importance of your exams and therefore the revision leading up to it. Like I said, the idea!

I was recently out with a friend I know from school, he is also studying medicine but at another university. He was telling me all about the people he sees in the libraries and all the crazy stories he’s heard from people (the amount of caffeine people manage to drink in 24h is a common feature in these stories).

Anyway back to my earlier point, we are expected to make sacrifices during study leave. I think most people do. People tend to go out less and come back earlier if they do. I knew a friend who locked herself out of Facebook by getting her friend to change her password, this however turned into a bad idea as she was “fraped” throughout study leave. Other people sacrifice things like going to the gym (I’m too tired once I get back from the library!), a healthy diet (I don’t have time to cook!) and with those sacrifices come sacrifices such as their looks (I know I got some spots I would have wanted to kill myself over back in my young teens).

And now to my friend’s story: he told me that he met a guy who tried to stay up as long as possible to learn as much as possible by basically doping himself up with caffeine. The whole situation got slightly out of control. This poor student ended up with anal leakage.

Where and when I go to the toilet is a sacrifice I am most definitely not willing to make!
