What's in a name?
I have a fantastic nurse colleague who runs our rapid access chest pain service. She was upset by a comment made by a patient last week 'you are not a doctor - I want the opinion of a consultant' . In the NHS we have adopted Agenda for Change -we band people (not doctors ) by the skills they have rather than the titles they carry. Clearly this resonates with some parts of our management structure as a number of organisations question what makes doctors different - something that I was particularly 'thrilled' to see was that the NHS employment body says that new consultants are not as ready for the role compared to a decade ago! So I'm asking you today
what makes doctors unique?
can a patient demand to see a doctor rather than another health care professional?

Definitely doctors are different than other healthcare professionals in that they are having a specifically focused training in clinical medicine. But the competent para-clinical staff is also equally good in managing the emergencies & they have a key role in the modern healthcare module.
